Food Waste

We offer a daily food waste collection service, which helps to ensure 100% diversion from landfill.

Oakbank-Services15

Oakbank Services offer a daily collection of food waste in the Dumfries & Galloway and Cumbria areas. We offer a wheelie bin exchange service for these collections, ensuring your food waste is handled in the cleanest way possible and leaving you with a clean, disinfected bin, eliminating any unwanted odours.

Recycling food waste helps to divert a significant amount of waste from landfill and also helps to reduce the contamination of your other recyclable materials, improving the quality and quantity that can be recovered.

Depending on the volume being produced we provide a range of containers for the separate collection of food waste from kitchen caddies through to wheelie bins and compactors.

How we recycle your food waste:

We guarantee everything we collect will be recycled in some way, diverting your food waste from landfill. Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is the main method of conversion we use to turn food waste materials into renewable energy.

AD plants produce a flammable mixture of gases known as biogas, mainly methane, which can be used to fuel a specialised generator to produce electricity.

Zero Waste (Scotland) regulations on food waste:

Zero Waste (Scotland) state that If you run a food business (you are considered to be a food business if you process, distribute or sell food, and that includes independent pubs, restaurants and hotels) which produces over 50kg of food waste per week, you must present it for separate collection.

The requirement to present food waste for separate collection will extend to all food businesses which produce over 5kg of food waste per week from 1 January 2016.

Rural food collection

If your business is located in a rural area, please contact a member of our food waste team, as you may be exempt from all the food waste requirements of the regulations.

Where food collections are available, it is illegal to dispose of food into the public sewer, for example, by using a macerator however, you may still want to examine the economic benefits of food recycling.

The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 require your business to take the following action:

  • Your business must present, where possible, metal, plastic, glass, paper and card separately for collection from 1 January 2014
  • Alternatively, if you are unable to separate your plastic, paper and card, we can offer a co-mingled dry mixed recycling (DMR) service
